TOURNAMENT REPORT

Fish River
 January 19, 2013
 		Hwy 98 Bridge
The Hawg Hunters fished the January tournament on Fish River near Foley, Alabama. The site was changed from the Tensaw River due to high water conditions and the possibility that the ramp parking area would be flooded. The conditions we found on Fish River were really good with water levels about normal for this time of the year. Water clarity in the creeks was about 4 feet.
We had an incoming tide all day and the skies were partly cloudy. Air temperature was in the low 40s but rose to the mid 60's around noon. Water temps were in the mid to upper 50's in the creeks and about 1 degree cooler in the main river areas.
We had 20 members fishing.

I drew out as a boater this month and my partner was Bill Myrick. Billy and I are good friends and we both knew that we could probably find fish in this new site. We both wanted to go in Water Hole Creek and as we were the 2nd boat out we had no problems getting there. We talked with Jere and his partner Dan and they wanted to go there also, but they wanted to start at the mouth so Billy and I decided to go the back of the creek where it forked and fish that area. Immediately Billy put 2 nice keepers in the boat and I thought we are really going to get on them but it was almost an hour before we got another hit. We both used junebug worms on shakey head jigs to catch most of our fish. I did manage one keeper on a chatreuse /white spinner bait. All the other fish we caught came on worms. We fished both forks as far back as we could go and that is where we caught our fish. There was not any solid pattern as some were up tight on the bank and others in the middle of the creek some on shady banks and others in bright sun. At the end of the day I had a small limit (culled 2 keepers) and Billy had 4 keepers. We each caught numerous short fish.

At the scales Dave Bock took the honors with 4 fish @ 7.08. He also had the lunker , a 3+ largemouth. He said he caught his fish on crankbaits on the main river fishing docks and seawalls. Congratulations Dave&.. nice job. John Buck managed to squeak out 2nd place with 5 fish @ 6.16 lbs. all on worms and one on spinner bait in the creeks. Third place went to Jere Jailitte with 5 fish @ 6.08 lbs. Jere also fished Water Hole creek, and he caught most of his fish in the middle area of the creek on junebug worms. 4th Place went to Thom LaBelle with 4 fish @ 5.09 lbs. I am not sure where he caught his fish. Congratulations to the top four places!!
Oh by the way, for those of you who got the email, please remember to tell Brian that he needs to get at least 4th place to get a check in our monthly tournaments.

Thanks to all who helped make this a good tournament with your attendance and participation and I hope next month we can have even more guys fishing. Unless there are high water issues we plan to hold the February tournament out of Cliff's on the Tensaw River. Traditionally February is a really good month to fish the lower delta areas. I hope the high muddy water conditions will be gone by the tournament time. Make your plans to attend the meeting and the tournament and let have a good turn out for it.
