This tournament was our last “short” tournament for the year, and we were blessed with moderate temps and did not have any storms during the tournament hours. We fished on the Tensaw River out of Hubbard’s landing. The water temp was in the mid 80’s most of the day and we had a falling tide. The clarity ranged from muddy in the main river areas to somewhat clear in the back ends of some creeks. Frank Kelly and I drew out as partners. We decided to start fishing in the back portion of Douglas Lake. We started out on the island and within about 10 minutes, Frank caught the first keeper. Shortly after, I caught a keeper and we thought that maybe we had something going. Maybe “going” was the right word because it was over an hour before we got another bite. We fished around several spots in Douglas and got a few bites and caught a couple of keepers and several small fish. About 10 am we decided to move to the fingers below Upper Bryant’s landing but we did not get a hit there. Then we went to just below Tallapoosa Creek and started fishing the main river banks. We picked up a fish here and there but nothing that was ever any concentration of fish. By the time we headed to the scales I had 4 keepers and Frank had 3. We each caught maybe 5-6 small fish in the day. All of our fish came on black soft plastics except for one that Frank caught on a yellow floating worm. At the scales most of the guys had fish. I think everyone caught fish but a few just never caught keepers. A stranger named Jeff Weaver took first place with 5 fish @9.32 lbs. That will put him in striking distance of first place in the yearly club standings for the next tournament. 2nd place went to Jeff’s partner David Dyess with 5 fish @8.00 lbs even. Great job guys! 3rd place went to Dave Bock with 5 fish @ 7.09 lbs. Better keep an eye on him guys the next 2 tournaments because he is getting good with the “shakey heads”. 4th Place was Jere Jaillite with 4 fish @6.91 lbs. This will give him a great lead in the yearly standings as the season winds down. For sure he will be difficult to catch, and the only guy that can catch him is Jeff. The lunker went to John Buck with a nice fish @ 2.51 lbs. Most of the guys said they caught their fish on black grape, black, and june bug colors in plastic worms. Our next tournament will be a 2 day event and we will have a fish fry for the evening meal of Saturday. The tournament will be Saturday on Lake Mitchell and then Sunday we will move to Lay Lake. This should be a great format as Lake Mitchell has been really hot for the last few years and we all know of the success we have had on Lay Lake. Make your plans to attend the tournament and join the fun and fellowship. Remember to be careful in the heat and keep your live wells running for the fish. Until next time… Keep Your Hooks Sharp!
