Jack Plates & Engine Heith:

The use of jack plates has become commonplace on today's high performance boats. Bass boats, lake race boats, even ski boats are finding that jack plates can provide a convenient, easy way to find that magical "sweet spot" for your engine height. Proper engine height is the key to ultimate high performance. Engine height is not a magic number. Proper engine height will be different from boat to boat and may even be different between two boats of the same make, model, and power due to rigging, size of driver, etc. On ultra high performance boats, you can often run the motor at a height where the prop shaft is actually ABOVE the bottom of the boat. On slower, heavier boats, the cavitation plate may need to be even with the bottom. If you feel as though your boat is not responding to trim and doesn't feel "loose", you may need to drop your engine height in order to give the prop more leverage or "bite."
If you have no problem with that sensation, then raise the motor up a bit.
BE SURE TO MONITOR ENGINE TEMPERATURE AND WATER PRESSURE. Raising the engine is one of the easiest ways to pick up speed.
