The June tournament for the Hawg Hunters was held on Tensaw River out of
Cliff's. It was about as crowded as the parking lot at the mall. Maybe it
wasn't such a bad idea to leave at 3:45 a.m. because shortly after our
arrival there was a long line of boats waiting to launch. We had 23
anglers trying to find a fish. As it turned out many did find fish, and
yes, it was hot, but not as bad as earlier in the week. The morning was
nice, but by the afternoon a south wind had kicked up and the old Tensaw
was rough and choppy.
My partner Stan Wright (Snickerfritz) and I found fish along the grass
beds on the main river above and below the landing. Fish were aggressive
and I had a limit early. Snickerfritz was getting hits but couldn't get a
solid hook up. (Sounds kind of like a personal problem doesn't it...)
Just as he was about to lose his discourage, a nice bass ate his
Ding-A-Ling and committed suicide in the live well. There were a few lulls
in the action, but we had active fish pretty much all day. Our fish were
hitting Zetabait shadpuppies and Ding-A-ling paddle tail worms worked
through the grass.
While our fish were in the grass, other Hawg Hunters found fish on
cypress knees and lay downs on a variety of baits including jerk worms,
spinner baits, crank baits and worms up and down the river.
As everyone gathered around the scales at the weigh-in, there were many
tales of the "big" one that got away. (Have you ever noticed that the same
people always lose a big one....I wonder if they would use good line maybe
that wouldn't happen so often. I've also heard that nets work better than
rod boxes for landing lunkers. Paul Sullivan didn't let his big fish get
away. He weighed in a pretty bass 4.15 lbs to take the lunker prize.
Almost everyone had fish to weigh. All totaled 57 were brought to the
scales. The total weight was 86.56 lbs. All in all, a pretty good day of
fishing and catching.
A Hawg Hunter tournament would not be complete without some mishap(s).
Rumor has it that Pete Potter is looking for a new rod and reel to replace
the one he lost overboard. (Pete see Jim Sr.....he knows where several
can be found.) Also, Jere Jaillite christened his "new" boat this
tournament with a first place win. It's a beatuiful rig and runs like a
scalded dog. Congratulations on the win Jere.....oh yeah, watch out for
parked vehicles!!!!! Hey Dave, I hear you've gone "Wacky".
The tournament results are listed below. They are not official but will do untill Jere gets them to Jim. The
secretary has the official stats. Keep your bait in the water.....Creek
