TOURNAMENT REPORT
LAKE SEMINOLE
MARCH 21/22, 2009

We made a trip to Lake Seminole for our March tournament. We had 14 fishermen in 7 boats hoping to try their luck on "Ol Sem". As luck would have it we had a cold front blow in the day before plus the lake was high due to rains from north Georgia a week ago. We had high blue skies and windy conditions. Water temps were in the mid to upper 60's in the flats and the water in the rivers was heavily stained. Most flats and creeks and back waters had clear water.

Ken Repine and I drew out as partners. We decided to try out luck in the mouth of fish pond drain. While we spent a half day on Friday there we were unable to locate anything that would make us want to return on tournament day. The winds kept us bouncing all day.
We decided to run the next morning to four foot ditch and give it a try.

Saturday morning turned out pretty much the same as Friday with cool temps and windy conditions. However we were able to put fish in the boat. We decided to concentrate on the sink holes in the flats and the depressions and fished water from about 3-9 feet deep. In about 20 minutes I connected with a nice 3 lb fish and my confidence was boosted immediately. We soon came to another sink and I picked up 2 more keepers on a flute in about 6 feet of water. It was not quite 8 am and I had 3 keepers and I was feeling good. My next fish did not bite until 10am and still I thought no problem I have a long time to get number 5. Ken and I fished hard for the next 5 hours with no bites. About 3 PM he caught a keeper and about 3:30 I got number 5. We caught them swimming a junebug worm over the grass.

We also have two new nominees for the "SlammerAward". It seems that Don Jahnke was trying to lift his trolling motor at the same time a large wave hit the boat so he decided to take a dive and see how cold the water really was. He managed to climb back in the boat without injury except for his pride. Dan Nash decided that Don could not "out do" him in his quest for the "Slammer" and he showed everyone just how deep the water was at the end of the dock. However he was unable to pull himself out of the water and had to walk the length of the dock in the water to get out….
in front of everyone!!!! He did mention that the water 3 feet down was much colder than the surface. Thankfully Don Jahnke was there to witness the dive and since he was already wet he helped Dan out of the water. Due to the fact that Dan's performance was in front of a packed house, he probably has an edge in the race for the "Slammer".

At the weigh in for day one, new comer, BuddyYates showed us what a spinner bait can do, and he had a nice bag of 5 fish@ 12.95 lbs to take day one first place. We cautioned him about the "2nd day jinx", and now he knows what we were talking about. Billy Myrick had 2nd place with 4 fish at 9.65 lbs. I was in 3rd place with my 5 little fish at 8.26 lbs. Jere Jaillite was in 4th with 3 fish at 7.39 lbs and the lunker at 4.93 lbs. Jere said he was on a good crank bait bite, but the wind would not allow them to fish the way they wanted.

We had a nice cookout on hamburgers and trimmings and all sat around the patio and shot the breeze and told stories. Ron Bridges learned a lesson about sharp knives as he tried to cut off his finger while slicing onions but other than that no one got hurt from the evenings fun.
Special thanks to all who helped with the set up and clean up afterwards. Next month we will have another meal at Lake Martin on Saturday night. More info will be given at the meeting.

Sunday morning brought more high blue skies and winds but not quite as bad as the day before. Ken and I headed to where we had caught the fish on Saturday but found them even harder to come by. I caught 2 crappie and several jacks and missed about 3 fish before I managed to catch a small keeper on a worm. Ken was able to boat 2 keepers on a junebug worm and took the boat honors. The tough conditions held for almost everyone……except Jere and his partner Ron. The winds laid just enough that he could take better control of the boat and make the most of his fishing skills. They hit a motherload !!!! Fishing on the lower end of the "Hooch" with crank baits and spinner baits, they brought in a combined total of over 40 lbs on the half day. As Jere later told me "It was the kind of day you dream of!"

At the scales Jere had 5 fish for 21.84 lbs. and lunker honors with a 6.98 hawg. Also this fish took the booray honors. Looks like a new
"Mister Booray" …sorry Mac. Ron also had a great bag of 5 fish weighing 18.95 lbs. Needless to say they both were smiling bigger than a possum eating ripe persimmons. I think that Jere's bag is a new one day record for our club. Also this is a new record for boat weight for one day and for two day tournaments. It may also be a new record for individual performance for 2 day tournaments for the Hawg Hunters. Great catch guys!!!!

Ok!!! For the weekend tournament 1st place with 29.23 lbs -Jere Jailitte…. 2nd place with 25.40 lbs-Ron Bridges. 3rd place with 17.93 lbs
Billy Myrick and 4th place with 14.82 lbs -Buddy Yates. All in all there were not really a lot of fish caught but the quality of the fish was good.
With the exception of the one super boat most of us had tough fishing, but as always we managed to have a great time and enjoyed ourselves.

Next month we fish out of Wind Creek State Park on Lake Martin. It will be another 2 day tournament and should be great fishing this time of the year. Traditionally we have done very well at Martin and since we have not fished it in about 2 years, I am really looking forward to it.
Make plans to be at the meeting and fish one of the prettiest lakes in the country.

Til next month….Keep Your Hooks Sharp!!!
