TOURNAMENT REPORT

Tensaw River
August 22, 2009
Hubbard's Landing

The Hawg Hunters fished out of Hubbard's Landing on the Tensaw River for the August tournament. This was our last short-day (2PM weigh in) for the year. Water levels were near normal, and color was stained but not bad or really muddy. Water temp was about 85 for most of the day. Early morning clouds gave way to high blues by mid-morning, and we had to deal with the dreaded neap tides.

Randy Cole and I drew out as partners. It was fun because we had not fished together in several years. We started out above Hubbard's and immediately started to get hits and caught a few fish but they would not keep. Ha, that's the story for the rest of the day basically. We fished down the river to the lower end of Briar Lake and still only caught short fish. At 12:30 I got lucky and caught a barely keeper in Coon Neck. We ran back up above Hubbard's for the last hour and Randy hooked and lost 3 nice keeper bass. Each was repeat of the other as they came to the surface and got hung on logs and came unbuttoned before we could get to them. We got hits all day and caught quite a few short fish and most of them came on Red Bug soft plastics.

We had an enjoyable day even though the fishing was tough. At the scales hardly anyone had anything to brag about. But as usual a few found some nice fish.

Tony Boyette had the only limit (5) for 9.48 lbs and took the win. He caught most of his fish on crank bait. Second Place went to "Big Fish" Bob Hanson who had 4 fish @ 7.74 lbs. He caught most of his on green pumpkin worms. Third place was taken by Lee Brannon who had 4 fish @ 7.57 lbs. Not sure what he caught his on, but we all know that he basically lives by the "chug bug". "Mr. Consistent" Buddy Yates took 4th place with 5 fish @ 5.11 lbs. Lee also had the lunker @2.94 lbs.

Fish were caught on a variety of lures from worms, creature baits, lizards, crank baits, buzz baits and top waters. Red shad was the most popular color choice in soft plastics.
Once again congratulation to the top 4 who all found some pretty nice Tensaw fish.

Please remember to read through the proposed changes so you will be informed when you get to the next meeting. Also please note that the meeting will start at 6:00 PM.
If you have proposals and have not already submitted them please send them to Jim asap!!

Our next tournament will be at Swift Creek on the Alabama River, west of Montgomery. It will be a 2 day event and we will have a cook out on Saturday night. Make plans now to attend the important meeting in September and also fish the tournament. The Alabama River presents an excellent fishery in that area and we have had very good tournaments there in the past. Until next time….
