PENSACOLA HAWG HUNTERS
TOURNAMENT REPORT
AUGUST 18, 2007

The Hawg Hunters fished the August tournament out of Upper Bryant’s Landing on the Tensaw River. We had 18 fishermen, 17 members and one guest participating. The early morning had an incoming tide and overcast skies with temps around 78 and a slight breeze.
Water temps were 85-87 and the color was lightly stained with about 1 foot visibility.

I drew out fishing with Jere Jaillite. It had been quite a while since we had fished together, and we had a great time visiting and fishing. Remarkably, we both had ideas about going north from the launch (most guys went south), and the primary places we wanted to fish were within about ¼ mile apart. We started out above Hubbard’s on the main run and fished frogs and crankbaits. With the overcast and breeze, the morning was quite pleasant, but we didn’t get many bites. Jere was the first to hook up. He pulled a crank bait down a log and it was gobbled up by a large mudfish. After a short fight he was able to retrieve his bait with only bent hooks. We worked to an area with a shallow lilly pad flat. There we threw the frogs. I was able to catch my first keeper of the day, a 1 pound monster, but at least I had one in the livewell. Jere was not as lucky as me, and he missed a couple on frogs. We worked the area for about an hour but only got a couple of gar to chase our baits.

From there we worked up the main run and stopped at a junction and fished a deep hole near a creek mouth. I was able to pull my 2nd keeper from there as well as a short fish. We left there and ran into a feeder creek where I caught a couple more short bass and Jere caught one short bass. However let in not be said that Jere Jaillite can’t catch grinnel, bowfin, mudfish, cotton fish, shupik, or any other name you want to call them.
He must have hooked up with half a dozen monsters, but never found a keeper bass. I really enjoyed the non-boater seat fishing with Jere.
With the searing heat that appeared by mid-morning, I was more than happy to be the non-boater.
Jere always leaves his partner plenty of fresh water to throw at, and it was really an enjoyable day.

At the scales there were many long faces and only a handful of fish. Jeff Weaver took the win with 2 nice fish for 3.93 lbs. His big fish took the lunker award @ 2.39 lbs. Nice job Jeff!! In the 2nd slot was Tony Boyette with 3 fish @ 3.38 lbs. Bill Myrick was 3rd place with 2 fish @ 2.98 lbs.
I managed to take 4th with my meager 2 fish bag totaling 2.65 lbs. Most of the fish that were caught came on plastics, with worms, craws, and frogs producing best. Only 9 guys were able to bring fish to the scales. One can only hope that the bite will get better as we get into September.

Next month we travel to Prattville, Alabama to fish the Alabama River out of Cooters Pond. That is a tremendous area to find lots of fish, and we have never fished there as a club. It will be a 2 day event, (full day Sat./1/2 day Sun.). Make your plans to be there and enjoy the fishing, fun, and fellowship. After the miserable summer tournaments that we have had in our coastal area,
it will be nice to get to an inland impoundment that is known for its good fishing.
