PENSACOLA HAWG HUNTERS
TOURNAMENT REPORT
MAY 20, 2006

The May tournament was held on the Tensaw River out of Upper Bryants Landing. We had high blue skies and hot weather. The river was falling but still a little high and very stained in the main channels. Cleaner water could be found in most of the sloughs and lakes.

We had 18 members fishing and no guests. My partner was CJ Garrison. We decided to gamble on a long run upriver to Boatyard lake in hopes of getting beyond the high water as the Alabama River had been falling for several days. When we go to Boatyard we found really great conditions. There was an outflowing current and the water was fairly clear. The only problem we had was we found NO fish. After a few hours of fishing futility we moved out to the dead run leading into boatyard but had the same results there. From there we fished the main river (Alabama) and even though it was realty a good color and only a foot or so high we caught No fish. We decided to fish our way back down to the Tensaw lake area. We worked really hard all day for no bass.

At the scales we found that only 11 guys even had a fish to show. Mack Cramer grabbed first place with 3 fish weighing 5.58 lbs. Second place went to Lee Brannon with 3 fish for 4.13 lbs. Pete Poter was 3rd with 2 fish for 2.48 lbs. Jere Jailite took 4th with 1 fish weighing 1.88 lbs. Mack Cramer also had the lunker which weighed a little over 3 lbs. lbs.

Most of the fish that were caught were caught on plastics and came from a variety of places on the Tensaw system. There was no real pattern. This has to be one of the worst tournament showings the Hawg Hunters have had in several years. Out of 18 fishermen 15 only had only one fish or none. There have been several tournaments out of that portion of the river system lately and none have had good results. Maybe the report from Game and Fish about the area lacking fish due to the kills brought on by Ivan is credible.

Next month we can only hope for better results as we move further up the river system to Holley Creek. Remember that we also start our summer tournament time schedule from safe daylight until 2 PM for tournament hours. Also, remember hot weather safety and prepare by drinking extra water for several days prior to the tournament to help avoid dehydration and overheating problems.
