PENSACOLA HAWG HUNTERS
TOURNAMENT REPORT
AUGUST 19, 2006

Black Creek Lodge on the Choctawhatchee River system was the site for our August tournament. We had 9 boats for a total of 18 fishermen.
The weather was typical August…..hot, hot, hot, hot, then a 2PM flood complete with the fireworks. The water temps were in the upper 80’s, and visibility fairly clear in the mid and lower portions of the system. The areas above the Hwy 20 bridge had a good stain.
We had a falling tide most of the day.

Brian Metcalf and I drew out as partners. We started out in the area around Black Creek Lodge early and managed a few shorts and a keeper each on floating worms. We tried buzz baits and worms but never got bit. I managed a small keeper in a canal near the ramp and Brian pulled caught a keeper from under a dock in the lower creek area. We saw several really nice bass cruising but could not entice them to bite. As the day wore on,
we went up river and fished deeper banks between Sisters and East River. We caught loads of warmouth and bream and a number of short bass. Brian managed another keeper on these banks.

I thought I was prepared for the heat but I was mistaken. By 11:00 Am I was hurting from the heat. I had to just sit down and rest and cool down with a cold wet towel. Brian was tougher than me and he managed to just keep on chunkin’. After that I was hit and miss for the rest of the day.

When we got back to the scales we found that there were several guys who never even caught fish. I was proud to have my little 12’ green trout!
We had 4 guys not bring a fish to the scales, 7 had one fish, 3 had two fish, 1 had three fish, and 1had a limit of five.

Lee Brannon had the limit to take 1st with 5.77lbs. Mack Y.W. Cramer had 3 fish for 4.34 lbs. Frank Kelly took 3rd with 2 fish for 3.89 lbs.
He also had the lunker at 3.2lbs. It was a pretty fish! Brian Metcalf was 4th place with 2 fish for 2.52 lbs. Fish were caught on a wide variety of baits, cranks, spinners, and an assortment of soft plastics. Obviously, it was another tough tournament day.
Maybe we can improve our luck in the coming months.

Our next tournament is a 2 day event at Lay Lake on September 23-24. Maybe the weather will have cooled a bit by then and we’ll have better results. Lay is a great fishery so make your plans to attend. Til next time…
