PENSACOLA HAWG HUNTERS
TOURNAMENT REPORT
AUGUST 20, 2005

The Hawg Hunters held the August tournament out of Upper Bryants Landing on the Tensaw River.
We had 11 boats with 22 fishermen. The water levels were about
normal and had a good stain in the main river, but some of the creeks had clearer water. We faced the in coming tide for the day with high blue skies
and extremely hot temps. Water surface temps were in the low to mid 80’s.

CJ Garrison and I ran down to Tensaw lake and fished some spots as we headed for the Mobile River.
CJ caught a short fish on a crank bait but that was it for
us in the Tensaw lake area. When we got to the Mobile River we found plenty of current and a decent color to the water. We fished heavy timber and laydowns
on the deep bends with crank baits (brown splatter back), worms and paca craws. We had limited success with each of us only catching one keeper and several shorts. The company was fine but the fishing was weak at best and
combined with the heat made for a tough day.

At the weigh-in, Fred Raby showed up with 4 nice fish weighing 7.35 lbs to take first place.
Brian Metcalf had a limit if 5 fish weighing 6.40 to take 2nd
place. Walter McCartney took 3rd place with 5.15 lbs including a nice 4.35 lb head for the lunker honors. Ken Repine slid into 4th place with 3.10 lbs.
The
top 3 places caught their fish down stream in the grass on buzz baits and frogs and flukes.

Only 12 of 22 fishermen managed to bring a keeper to the scales. There was an article on Aug 14 in the Mobile Press Register about of how Ivan and the low water season prior to the hurricane affected the Tensaw lake area. Judging from the results that I’ve seen for the past several weeks, I believer that the data presented must be pretty accurate. Predictions are for the tournament size fish not to recover until 2006 or 2007.
I guess that we’ll just have to
wait and see if it plays out.

We will journey to Lay Lake in September. We’ve not fished this lake before, but its reputation for fish production is very good. Please make your plans to participate in this 2 day event. I know that we’ll have a good time, and I’m
looking forward to hooking up with some of those Coosa River spots!

Til next time…Keep your hooks sharp!!
