"Randy's Club Report"
Covering the Pensacola Hawg Hunters
Perdido River
Hurst Hammock Landing

February 20, 1999

This Month's Report By
John Buck

The monthly Pensacola Hawg Hunters Bass Tournament was held out of Hurst Hammock on the lovely Perdido River on Saturday, Feb. 20. The mighty Perdido vs 21 Hawg Hunters ....wow what a match up...!

The morning started with the usual chatter among the guys about what they were going to do to catch a limit....New guys listen to this stuff but the older ones know that it is mostly lies designed to get Wally or Jim Sr. to change their game plans. Now Fred had told us that there was another tourney out of the same landing once again but this time he was right..there were about 11 other boats there also....and parking was crowded. However everyone found a place and the blast-off proceeded with measured order as we patiently obeyed the directives of Tournament Director Stand-in Brian Metcalf and his able assistant former President Kevin Simons.

I was fortunate to have a great partner in Dave Powell. Dave and I had both prefished the lovely Perdido and found it teeming with aggressive bass and we both started the day ready for a limit each. Five minutes after blast off we were fishing along one of my favotrite grass lines and immediately both of us had nice strikes on top water baits. We each missed them....a couple of minutes later and we both had fish explode on our shad puppies again and still no hook ups...then they quit hitting...we really
had a long day after that..we tried ledges, heavy cover, creeks, main river channels, flats, you name it..but the results were the same...no fish today.. Around 2:30 we found some active fish, but were still riding that jinx of no hook ups. My partner did have a bit of concern with the wildlife especially the Great Blue herons we saw flying occasionally...seems as if his wife is about to give birth to another bassin gal...and is due any time now..so we kept a close look at the flying birds to make sure they weren’t carrying any diapers. Dave said they weren’t storks but he sure kept his eye on them.

Finally 4 o’clock got there and we gathered for the weigh-in. Only 9 Hawg Hunters scored on the beautiful Perdido and 11 got shut out....Coming in 3rd place with 3 fish was Fred Raby who tricked ‘em just before the weigh-in and had 3.13 lbs.....Jim Cowley was 2nd with 2 fish and the lunker for a total of 4.16 lbs...and Brian Metcalf showed up with 3 fish to take 1st place ...AGAIN.... with 4.31 lbs....Congratulations to all who managed to find a keeper fish on the beautiful Perdido. Our tournament
next month is on Lake Seminole....til then...Catch a Big One.
