"FISHING WITH FRED"
Covering Tidal Waters And Impoundments
The Upper Tensaw
Reports are the bass are on in the morning, great top water action. My partner and I go to cash in and sure enough, first cast, a 6 pounder jumps all over my chug bug. The start of a great day, and the end.
We followed all the rules, talked to the locals, hit the water at daylight and thought we were just right to catch that exciting top water bite. When we pulled into our first spot near Stiggins, we saw six other boats. We picked a spot not too close to anyone else and started working the bank. I had noticed the other fishermen using a buzzbait but had not seen anyaction; they were all fishing the Cypress. I decided to work the outer edge of the pads with a chug bug, and it paid off once!
We talked to some of the other guys and they had not done anything, we continued to fish the same area for about an hour, and not even a swirl. So, with an incoming tide we went to find moving water. An hour and a half later I managed to boat another bass (eight inches long). We ended our day early, as we noticed we were the only boat left on the river and we had a
total of two bites by 1:00 PM.
It was an escape, and we had an encounter with a four foot gator that thought he wanted a boat ride, but changed his mind after two or three slaps across the nose with a rod tip. Some days are just not right to put 'em in the boat.
Good luck
Fred Raby
