The Panhandle Bass Club made the trip to Lake Martin in Alexander City, Alabama for our April Tournament. Of course we found a cold front to follow so we had high winds and low temps, however the fish did cooperate somewhat. The water level is still about 6 foot below normal pool so a lot of fishable spots were high and dry.

We had 22 fishermen including guests and caught 166 bass weighing 213 pounds for the two days fished. Tony Boyette came in first with 14 fish, 20.17 lb. Cliff Armstrong was second with 12 fish, 17.14 lb. and Rich Cornelius finished out third place with 12 fish 16.85 lb. Big fish Fred Raby 5.22 Saturday, Wayne Thomley 2.82 Sunday.

There was an accident but no serious injury. One of our members hit a boat wake while making a turn and lost control of his boat, throwing him into the water. The water temp was 59 degrees so hypothermia was a concern. He did have his like jacket zipped and buckled, his kill switch attached which prevented serious problems. Another member saw it happen and came to his aid. Fortunately with his life jacket fitted properly it was easy to roll him into the boat by putting his arms through the arms of the floating members vest and using his legs roll backwards pulling him into the boat. He then dried him off gave him a change of dry clothes and recovered his boat which had run about 50 yards away. We should all learn a valuable lesson about speed, boat wakes and safety precautions from this. Remember it is always a good idea to have a complete change of clothes in your boat.

Fishing was so so, there were a lot of fish caught on c-rigs and several on cranks, but the topwater bite has not happened yet. I did manage to catch a 5.2 largemouth on top but there were few reports of other topwater action.

Keep Your Line Wet!!
