"FISHING WITH FRED"
Covering Tidal Waters And Impoundments
A Good Day Fishing
After a disappointing absence from our club competition last weekend I had to have a 'fix'. Several of us met at the Swamphouse on Escambia Saturday morning and threw a few bucks into the hat to see who could catch the biggest fish.
My plan had been to stay down in the grass since the high water would be harder to fish, but when our T Director said we would only weigh in 1 fish I decided to go up river to see what I could find.
There was another small tournament going on also, so the river was crowded moving up toward my secret spot. Fortunately, I was able to maneuver around all of them to get there first. It was a good thing, I made a few cast on top, no action. I then picked up a crankbait and BINGO, five casts, five 2 pound bass. They looked like they came out of the same mold. I continued to work the mid part of the lake just off the river and managed to boat a total of 9 keeper bass on a Bandit 'Spring Craw'. Still not satisfied that I had that 1 lunker I moved to a few other spots, but whatever magic I had before had gone. The fish I caught were all in about 4 foot of water and on wood, and I did take the $$ when it was over. Like always there were some who did catch fish and some who did not seem to put anything together. John Buck caught fish on a Shad Puppy, Little rock caught fish on some kind of top water bait and those were the best stories
of the fish catchers.
Anytime you can catch 5 keepers on Escambia you have had a good day. I ended up with 9 and had a great day.
Good luck
Fred Raby
